Miscellaneous Glossary terms


Community Development
Refers to programs or services that: focus on increasing the involvement of citizens in their communities, advocate and educate for social change, encourage resource collaboration, and fundraise.

Children's Services
Refers to any services that support infants, young children and teens.

Civic Organizations
Refers to service clubs whose goals include supporting people and organizations in the community. Many service clubs fundraise, offer scholarships, or support local causes.

Agencies
Refers to human services provider agencies in our database, for which we store contact information, as well as information about services provided, fees structure, hours of operation and much more.

Behavioral Health Services
Refers to outpatient and/or inpatient services for adults, children, and families that offer assessment, counseling, case management, psychiatric evaluations, medication, and/or substance abuse education and treatment.

Area Served
Refers to the geographic areas where an agency’s services are available.

Animal and Pet Services
Refers to services that assist with one or more of the following: kenneling and animal shelters/safe homes, animal abuse and neglect, animal control and issues of public safety, veterinary care, obedience and training, etc.

ADA Accessible
Refers to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requiring some employers, businesses and non-profit agencies that serve the public to make “reasonable accommodations” for persons with disabilities to access services.

Corrections
Refers to services that supervise adult and youth persons who are incarceration, on parole, and/or probation to practice civil and productive behaviors.

Counseling
Refers to services offered by a clinician/therapist on a regular basis to focus on goals, objectives and strategies for solving problems related to grief, depression, stress, other mental health issues and/or substance abuse.

Disability Services
Refers to services that support, aid, advocate, enhance, and/or provide treatment for persons with psychical and/or mental disabilities, and/or their families.

Domestic Abuse
Refers to services that provide shelter, advocacy, information and referral, education, safety planning, and/or legal advocacy for individuals, families and communities affected by domestic abuse.

Education/Job Training
Refers to services that assist or provide tutoring, teach, or train adults and/or youth to further their education and/or increase employment opportunities.

Emergency Needs
Refers to services that may include limited assistance for one or more of the following: food, clothing, furniture, appliances, and/or utility assistance on an emergency basis.

Emergency Numbers
A list of numbers to call in cases of emergency.

Emergency Support Services
Refers to services provided by police, fire, paramedic, or other first responders during or immediately after cases of emergency.

Faith Communities
Refers to faith-based organizations (churches, etc.) located in Northern Pinal County.

Food/Nutrition
Refers to services that provide food on a limited basis and information for consumers, educators and other professionals in the areas of food, nutrition and health, and food safety.

Gay / Lesbian / Bi-Sexual /Transgender Services
Refers to any programs that provide appropriate services for the GLBT community.

Government Services
Refers to any services that are provided by local, county, state or federal governments.

Health
Refers to services that provide healthcare and treatment for diseases and conditions; emergency care; education and information about prevention, wellness, awareness; health insurance, and/or medications.

Housing Assistance
Refers to services that assist individuals and/or families obtain transitional and/or permanent housing.

Immigration/Naturalization
Refers to programs that provide services for immigrants, refugees, and others not of United States citizenship.

In-Home Services
Refers to any services that provide customized supports enabling people to live in or return to their own home. They may include personal care, habilitation, respite care, attendant care and housekeeping, case management, and other community outreach services.

Information and Referral
Refers to services that help people in need find the programs or services that can best alleviate or eliminate that need.

Interpreter Services
Refers to programs that provide translation services to persons speaking languages other than English and/or communicating with American Sign Language.

Legal
Refers to services that provide advice, brief services, referrals, pro se workshops and/or direct representation on issues such as: domestic relations, housing rights, public benefits, consumer issues, immigration, etc.

Northern Pinal County
Refers to the seven (7) communities located in the northern portion of Pinal County, Arizona: Apache Junction, Florence, Gold Canyon, Johnson Ranch, Queen Creek, Queen Valley, and Superior.

Other Organizations
Refers to additional information not included in the other sections of the directory. May include useful websites or additional resources.

Pregnancy
Refers to services that include: pregnancy testing, physician referral, counseling, information and education, prenatal care, and/or parenting classes and support.

Protective Services
Refers to specialized services that seek to prevent dependency, abuse and neglect of vulnerable populations. Services may include receiving, screening and investigating allegations of abuse and neglect, assessments of safety and the imminent risk of harm, and evaluating whether emergency intervention is needed.

Senior Citizen Services
Refers to any services that are provided to persons aged 50 years or more. (Refer to individual agency criteria for specific age requirements.)

Refers to programs that offer emergency and/or transitional shelter for individuals and families affected by domestic abuse, neglect and exploitation, and/or homelessness.

Refers to services that offer counseling, support, detox and/or treatment to address the maladaptive pattern or dependency of using certain drugs, alcohol, medications, and toxins.

Support Groups
Refers to support groups helping people in Northern Pinal County. May or may not be associated with Agencies included in our directory.

Transportation
Refers to services that provide transportation to specific groups of individuals or the general public for a fee or at no cost.

TTY
An assertive device, known as a teletypewriter, used to communicate with persons with hearing and/or speech loss. Also referred to as a text telephone or TDD.

Veterans/Military Services
Refers to services that address the needs of active duty service members, United States veterans and their families.

Victim Services
Refers to services that provide support, information and referral, and/or advocacy, to victims or crime, sexual assault or domestic abuse.
